Our Vision
Our vision is a humanitarian system where dignity, solidarity, and local leadership come first. We imagine a future where mutual aid is recognised as a legitimate and effective response, not as an afterthought, but as the foundation of how communities survive, adapt, and thrive in times of crisis. In this vision, aid is not something done to people, but something built with them—grounded in their own agency, culture, and knowledge.
We aspire to a world where international actors walk alongside communities rather than ahead of them, offering solidarity instead of control. A world where grassroots groups have the resources, visibility, and respect they need to sustain their work, and where responses are shaped by the people most affected. This is the humanitarian system we are striving for: locally led, dignified, and effective—rooted in mutual aid.
What We Do
At Karama, we believe that the people closest to a crisis are also the ones best placed to respond. That’s why we work to strengthen mutual aid—the informal, community-led networks that save lives and support dignity when disaster strikes. By mapping existing responses, providing direct and flexible funding, and helping groups overcome barriers like logistics or financial systems, we ensure that grassroots actors are resourced, visible, and recognised for the vital role they play in humanitarian action.
We also create spaces for dialogue and collaboration between mutual aid groups and international organisations, fostering solidarity instead of dependency. By shifting power, building trust, and championing community-led solutions, we are working towards a humanitarian system that is more dignified, effective, and sustainable—rooted in the principle of solidarity over charity
Our Network
Our network brings together mutual aid groups from across the wolrd who are on the frontlines of crisis response. These groups, including community based organisations and faith groups are deeply rooted in their communities, providing immediate and dignified support when it is needed most. By connecting them, we create a stronger, more united force for locally led humanitarian action.
Through this network, members collaborate, share experiences, and learn from one another, building resilience that goes beyond borders. Together, they amplify their voices, showcase community-led solutions, and engage with international actors on equal footing. Our vision is a vibrant ecosystem of mutual aid that demonstrates the power of solidarity and strengthens humanitarian responses across the region.
